Massachusetts Pirates Kick Off Their Inaugural Season: A True Win For The City Of Worcester

On April 7th, 2018 a teal and navy carpet of AstroTurf  lined the arena floor of the DCU Center – a sight that Worcester was excited to see as it meant only one thing: Arena Football was back in Massachusetts.

At a press conference held in November 2017 the Massachusetts Pirates, who now call the DCU Center their home, announced that they would begin their initial season in April of 2018. Since then, the team and front office staff has worked in sync with the DCU Center management to prepare for a smooth upcoming arena football season and most importantly, opening night.

As game day began, fans were treated with access to the Budlight Tailgate Zone out on DCU Center’s front plaza. The pre-game fan fest, which will continue throughout the season, included games (Pirate cornhole anyone !?), appearances by Arrrrrrthur the mascot, tons of great pre-game eats from local vendors, face painting, a live band, and a beer truck presented by Budlight.

As we inched closer to kickoff, the buzz in the arena was so apparent – the people of Worcester were both excited and curious as to what would come of this newly developed team. The team itself however, is well seasoned and comprised of many former NFL vets, D1 college athletes, and even a few rookies to the professional scene sprinkled in. The lights went down and the National Anthem, sung by Jasmine Easler of Rent The Musical (national touring cast) echoed through the arena in what was truly a chilling and memorable performance.

The first touchdown in franchise history was scored by Devonn Brown within the first 5 minutes of the game. Throughout the remainder of the game the energy level remained at a solid 10 with the crowd staying just as involved and engaged as they got to know the game of Arena Football and its rules that differ from the NFL.

The Pirates came away with the win, making it a remarkable night from start to finish as they showed Worcester what the National Arena League is all about. We can’t wait to see what the rest of the season holds for the Massachusetts Pirates! We’ll see you at The Cove.
